GE WASHINGTON ERL ARMY IN AMERICA, bare head of Washington right / WASHIN REUNIT PAR UN RARE ASSEMBLAGE LES TALENS DU GUERRIER & LES VERTUS DU SAGE, Cannon, banners, arms, trumpets, and drums before a glory of rays. From the Sand Collection.

The reverse legend of this medal is derived from the French writer Voltaire’s 1723 work La Henriade. A notice of this medal’s creation was published in the London Chronicle in April 1778, indicating that it was struck at Paris. However, at this time, French law prohibited striking of medals anywhere but the Monnaie de Paris, whose records lack any indication of this type having been made there. Regardless of where it was created, this type is certainly the earliest medal struck depicting Washington.
