BITHYNIA, Nicaea(?). Caracalla. AD 198-217. AR Cistophorus (23mm, 8.21 g, 12h). Struck circa AD 198-205. Laureate head right / Legionary aquila left between two signa. Metcalf, Severan Cistophori 12 (same dies); RG –. Lightly toned, porosity. Near VF. Very rare.

Metcalf notes that an attribution to a specific mint during the Severan period is not possible but must have been near a military outpost. Cappadocia has long been the preferred city for the coinage but recent scholarship has pointed towards Bithynia as its origin.

Closing Date and Time: 19 October 2022 at 13:29:00 ET.

All winning bids are subject to an 20% buyer’s fee.
