ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. 1st-3rd century AD. PB Tessera (10mm, 1.38 g, 5h). Facing gorgoneion / Sphinx seated right. Cf. Gülbay & Kireç 208 (for obv.) and Leu 16, 3191 (for rev.; same die). Brown surfaces. VF.
From the Joshua Lee Collection. Ex Aventine Numismatics.
Though smaller in module than most, this charming little tessera exhibits the same mixing of obverse/reverse dies and types that is common in the Ephesian tesserae series. Here, the sphinx reverse is paired with a facing gorgoneion, while on the Leu example the obverse depicts a simple pentagram. However, the Ephesian types appear to have had their mixed dies struck at separate times, while on this example it appears that both sides were struck simultaneously.
