CAROLINGIANS. Charles le Chauve (the Bald). As Charles II, King of West Francia, 840-877. AR Denier (21mm, 1.40 g, 11h). Class 1b. Parisii (Paris) mint. Struck 840s. + CΛRLVS REX, cross pattée / PΛRI/SII in two lines. Coupland, Early 20; Depeyrot 761; M&G 826; MEC 1, 833. Toned, edge chipped. VF.

From the Simon Coupland Collection.

The coins of Paris with the mint-name in field are less common then the temple coinage. The obverse is different, suggesting the two types were struck consecutively rather than concurrently. The legend reads +CARLVSREX, with no FR; on the reverse the mint name is just PARI-SII, without CIVITAS. It seems likely that this type was struck after the temple coinage, being replaced by the Gratia dei rex type in 864. [S. Coupland}
