ARCADIA, Psophis. Geta. As Caesar, AD 198-209. Æ Assarion (21mm, 5.44 g, 12h). Bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / [Ψ]ΩΦЄIΔIΩN, Dionysus standing facing, head left, holding cantharus, leaning left elbow on column surmounted by an uncertain object. BCD Peloponnesos – (but see cf. BCD 1689 for original type for Septimius Severus); NCP –; BMC –. Dark red-brown patina, light porosity, die flaw on reverse. Good Fine. Extremely rare.

This reverse die started as Apollo standing left, leaning on a column (see BCD 1689 for the type for Septimius Severus). The reverse die has been re-engraved to add an over-sized cantharus to his lowered right hand, the cantharus is in high relief indicating a deeper than normal engraving. BCD, in his notes for coin 1689, mentions that the figure could either be Apollo or Dionysus, it looks like the engravers wanted to make it less ambiguous on this coin.
