Fatimids. al-'Aziz billah. AH 365-386 / AD 975-996. AV Dinar (19.1mm, 4.09 g, 5h). Al-Mahdiya mint. Dated AH 372 (AD 982/3). Obverse outer margin begins: bismillah duriba hadha al-dirham.... Cf. Nicol 804 (standard dinars of this mint and date). Buckled flan, surface marks. Fine. Extremely rare.
As well as a plentiful issue of gold dinars, silver half-dirhams were also struck at al-Mahdiya during this year (Nicol 830). The use of ‘dinar’ or ‘dirham’ in the obverse margin is the only difference between the legends on the two denominations.
