It seems that dinars issued during AH 247, the final year of al-Mutawakkil’s reign, were struck on narrower, thicker flans approximately 16mm in diameter. Similar small-flan dinars were issued under his successor, al-Muntasir, but the practice appears to have been abandoned soon afterwards. No explanation has been advanced for this curious phenomenon.
