In 1694, heavy rains and a swarm of locusts decimated crop yields in Germany, leading to widespread famine and spiking food prices. As rampant speculation exacerbated the food shortage, many people blamed Jewish merchants. A series of satirical medals were created to propagate this conspiracy. When famine returned in 1770-1772, a glut of new “Kornjude” medals were issued, again capitalizing on the supposed speculators.
