Hadrian. AD 117-138. AR Denarius (18mm, 2.69 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 119-circa mid 120. IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG, Laureate bust right with bare chest, slight drapery / P M TR P COS III, FELIC AVG across field, Aeternitas standing left, holding heads of Sol and Luna. RIC II.3 –; RSC 601e; BMCRE p. 272, note 268. Toned, granular surfaces, flan flaw and scratches on reverse. Good VF. The engraver of this reverse die made a mistake: having rendered the figure of Aeternitas holding busts of the Sun and the Moon, he then mislabeled the type FELIC - AVG instead of the correct AETER - AVG. A denarius showing this engraver's error first came to light, fortunately with a photograph, in Mouchmov's Reka Devnia Hoard Report of 1934; this coin is from the same dies on both sides and may be only the second example recorded. |
