M. Cato. 89 BC. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.90 g, 3h). Rome mint. Diademed and draped female bust right / Victory seated right, holding palm frond and patera. Crawford 343/1b; Sydenham 596; Porcia 5; RBW –. Attractively toned with iridescence around devices. Good VF.

From the Wild Rose Collection. Ex Spink 19004 (27 March 2019), lot 187.

One of the more interesting variations of Roman celator engraving style is this reverse composition of the wings of Victory. First engraved with a continuous line, the lines were then superimposed with tiny dots to add a rather three dimensional aspect. The toning on this example serves to highlight this particular approach to the engraving.
