LUCANIA, Sybaris. Circa 550-510 BC. AR Hemiobol(?) (11mm, 0.23 g, 11h). Bull standing left, head right; VM in exergue / Large M above V; three pellets around. Cf. S&S Class B, pl. 48, 12 (obol); cf. HN Italy 1739 (obol); CNG E-556, lot 11 var. (no pellets); CNG E-492, lot 17 var. (same); CNG 109, lot 30 var. (same). Lightly toned, minor doubling on obverse. Good VF. Rare.

Although this reverse type is only known on obols, and no hemiobols are previously known with this type, the weight is very low for the theoretical weight of 0.40 grams for an obol at this time.
