From the Robert J Weinstein Collection.

This lot presents an excellent assemblage of the various ax-money types of Latin America. Small ax-shaped bronze objects first appear in what is today Ecuador around AD 900 and proved to be interesting to the native cultures in West Mexico, who began producing their own around 1200 or 1300. Though there is debate among archaeologists whether these objects functioned as an early form of money or solely as grave goods, it is clear that by the time of the Spanish conquest they were being paid in tribute and used as money.
