STUART. Charles I. 1625-1649. AR Crown (43mm, 28.45 g, 6h). Exeter mint, mm. rose. Dated 1644. King, holding sword, on horseback left / Shield with arms of England in first and third quarters. Brooker 1035; North 2557; Seaby 3058. Near VF, toned, small rectangular punch with I•S in reverse field.

The punch on the reverse is clearly a silversmith’s mark, but it cannot be tied to a specific maker. The initials IS are by far the most common among English smiths of the 17th and 18th centuries.
