151, Lot: 273. Estimate $75.
Sold for $49. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Justinian I. 527-565. Æ Follis (32mm, 17.91 g). Constantinople mint. Struck 527-537. Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right; P-headed cross (chrismon) in right field / Large M flanked by two stars; E/CON. SB 162; DOC-; MIBE 83.4; SB 160 var. Fine, weak strike, encrusted patina. Rare.

These Chrismon-marked folles (the symbol is also found on coins of types SB 159 and 162) are one of the few rare early Byzantine pieces with an obverse control mark. All types are from the same officina in Constantinople, the 5th, which apparently was set aside for special issues. Only a handful of each type is known.
