Revolt of the Heraclii. 608-610. Æ Half Follis (19mm, 6.70 g). Carthage mint. Bare-headed beardless bust facing, holding eagle-tipped sceptre / Large XX flanked by star and E, cross above; KRTS. DOC II 6; SB 713. Fine, brown patina.

From the Henry Chitwood Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group XXIX (30 March 1994), lot 1137.

There are two portrait varieties on the Heraclius revolt issues. The scarcer type displays an older bearded bust that represents the elder Heraclius, who as governor of Africa started the revolt against Phocas in 608. He chose not to take the throne himself upon to deposition of Phocas, but rather elevated his son Heraclius, who is shown beardless on the coins.
