Agrippina Senior. Wife of Germanicus, AD 5-33. Æ Sestertius (35mm, 27.47 g). Rome mint? Struck under Claudius, circa AD 50-54. Draped bust right / TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG GERM P M TR P IMP (sic!), Large S C. Cf. RIC I 102 (Claudius). Fine, brown surfaces.

From the Henry Chitwood Collection.

A highly unusual coin. With the addition of the title Germanicus we should expect the reverse legend to end in P P, but it most clearly does not. In addition, the portrait appears to be lacking the loose curl of hair that normally flows down Agrippina’s neck. Although the style overall is quite good, it is possible that this is not an issue of the Rome mint, but the product of an unofficial or provincial mint.
