Muhammad Ibrahim was the son of Rafi-ud-Dawla, both of whom served briefly as Mughal emperor in the course of the plottings of the Sayyid brothers, Abdullah Khan and Hussain Khan, two adventurers who played kingmakers after the death of Shah Alam I in 1712. For ten years they controlled the empire behind a succession of puppet rulers, until they fell victim to the plots of Muhammad Shah in 1722.
