MACEDON, Chalkidian League. Circa 432-348 BC. AR Tetradrachm. Struck circa 420-410 BC. Laureate head of Apollo left, with short hair / Kithara; small E on left upright, uncertain letter on right upright. CNG 72, lot 229 (same rev. die), otherwise unpublished. Good VF, small reverse metal flaw.

As with the CNG 72 piece, this unpublished issue shares some stylistic affinities with Robinson & Clement’s earliest tetradrachm groups. The style of the obverse is most similar to their group E tetradrachms, particularly in the rendering of the eye and hair. The reverse, however, with small letters on the uprights of the kithara, is more like groups G, I, and J. Of these three groups, though, only G has the right-facing Apollo with short hair on any of its obverse dies.
