HANOVER. George III. 1760-1820. AR Proof Shilling (5.90 g, 6h). Dated 1787. GEORGIVS • III • DEI • GRATIA •, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / • M • B • F • ET • H • REX • F • D • B • ET • L • D • S • R • I • A • T • ET • E • 1787, cruciform coat-of-arms with crowns in the angles; hearts in Hanoverian shield. Edge: plain, but struck in collar. Cf. ESC 1226; SCBC 3746. As Struck, light hairlines, deeply toned iridescent patina. ($2000)

From the Dr. Thomas Dailey Collection.

The details of the 1787 proof shilling with hearts are given in ESC as "...plain edge. Heavy flan, struck without collar." This plain edge piece is, if anything, underweight, and was clearly struck with a collar. There are a number of varieties of 1787 proof shillings, and this appears to be a new type.
