MACEDON, Roman Protectorate. Circa 147 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.83 g, 3h). Amphipolis mint. Wreathed, diademed, and draped bust of Artemis right, bow and quiver over shoulder, in the center of a Macedonian shield decorated with seven eight-pointed stars within double crescents, each separated by seven pellets / MAKE-DONWN, club; monogram above; all within oak wreath with acorns, [thunderbolt to left]. MacKay, Macedonian 13f (O3/R12 – this coin); AMNG III 195.4 (this coin); SNG Ashmolean -; SNG Copenhagen -; Jameson 1994 (same dies). EF, toned, area of dark find patina. Very rare. ($3000)

From the Robert Weimer Collection. Ex Sotheby, Wilkinson, and Hodge (28 May 1900), lot 223.

The LEG MAKEDONWN issue ended with the departure of the Roman peace embassy in the spring of 147 BC. MacKay argues that the MAKE-DONWN issue began immediately after their departure, and the new reverse type probably expresses the re-establishment of Macedonian independence (from a local king, not the Romans). He also spÉculates that Artemis' wreath may be an allusion to the victory over Andriskos.
