BOIOTIA, Tanagra. Early-mid 4th century BC. AR Obol (0.74 g). Boiotian shield / Prow right; A[T] above; all within incuse concave circle with curved edge. Head, Boeotia p. 53; Imhoof-Blumer, Boeotiens, 101. Near VF, some corrosion, two edge splits. Very rare. ($300)

Purchased from Classical Numismatic Group Coin Shop (Electronic Fixed Price List), December 2002.

The prow-reverse obols of Tanagra are far more elusive than their entries in reference books would indicate; when it comes to the hemiobols of the same reverse type (BMC 48) this writer has never seen one offered for sale!
