BOIOTIA, Tanagra. 457-448 BC. AR Stater (12.08 g). Boiotian shield / Forepart of bridled(?) horse right; [T]-A-(N retrograde) clockwise around from upper left; all within incuse square. Traité III 333, pl. CCIII, 32 = BMC 22 corr. (no wreath on horse); Naville-Ars Classica XIII (27 June 1928), lot 728 (same dies). Near VF, even grey tone, light pitting and small scratch in right field on reverse, small dig on horse's chest. Very rare. ($500)

This coin was also part of the hoard mentioned in the note of lot 221 above. It has been cleaned since and does look as if it has been circulating for some time (but not for 80 years) before its concealment. We may therefore be dealing with, at least in part, an "accumulation" type hoard, which introduces many uncertainties when it comes to dating its contents.
