BOIOTIA, Pharai. Circa 475-450 BC. AR Stater (12.11 g). Boiotian shield / Square incuse with clockwise mill-sail pattern; archaic phi in centre. Pozzi 1386 = Pozzi (Boutin) 3206; J. Hirsch XIV (27 November 1905), lot 361; cf. Classical Numismatic Group 42 (29-30 May 1997), lot 311 (same obv. die). Good VF, light grey tone. Unusually well centered for issue. Very rare. ($1000)

Ex Sotheby's London 21 November 1985, lot 98.

This particular type of Pharai stater, with the small Q in the centre of a recessed windmill pattern, the wings of the windmill turning clockwise, is earlier and even rarer than the issues that follow.
