MAXIMIANUS. 285-305 AD. Æ Medallion (36.57 gm, 6h). Rome mint. Struck circa 296-299 AD. IMP C M A VAL MAX-IMIANVS P F AVG, laureate half-length bust right, wearing toga picta over tunica palmata, seen from front, holding eagle-tipped sceptre in right hand / HERCVLI CON-SERVATORI AVGG, Hercules seated facing on rock outcropping, holding right hand over right thigh and resting left forearm on top of lion's skin lying on lap; left hand holding club set on ground; quiver and bow in right field. Cf. Gnecchi II pg. 127, 2 and pl. 126, 4 (smaller module; head right, wearing lion's skin headdress); Toynbee -; Dressel -; BMCREM -; MRV -; MFA -; Froehner -; Cohen -. Choice VF, mottled dark green and brown patina with flecks of red, traces of silvering. Apparently unique and unpublished. ($5000)
