THRACE, Byzantium. Caracalla. 198-217 AD. Æ 30mm (20.69 gm, 1h). Aelius Ponticus, magistrate. ANTWNINOC AVGOVCTOC, laureate and cuirassed bust right, cuirass decorated with aegis, holding spear over shoulder with left hand / EP AI PONTIKOV BVZANTIWN, TWO HANGING BASKET-TORCHES, a modius with grain ears and poppy between them. BMC Thrace pg. 103, 81; cf. SNG Copenhagen 513 (same obverse die); cf. Mionnet Supp. II pg. 257, 320 (reverse type). Good VF, glossy dark green patina with some earthen encrustation. Bold military portrait. ($1000)
