CILICIA, Tarsos. Balakros, Satrap of Cilicia. 333-323 BC. AR Stater (10.88 gm, 11h). Draped bust of Athena facing slightly left, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet, single-pendant earring, and necklace / Baaltars seated left, holding sceptre in right hand; grain ear and grapes to left, B (erased) and ivy leaf to right, T below. SNG Levante Supp. 21; SNG France 2, 367; BMC Lycaonia pg. 175, 74; SNG Copenhagen -; SNG von Aulock 5964. Choice EF, attractive toning. ($1000)

From the Ronald Cohen Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 38 (6 June 1996), lot 385.

Balakros was appointed by Alexander as satrap of Cilicia. On this reverse die, the B for Balakros has been intentionally erased, perhaps suggesting that during the course of this issue Balakros came to be no longer in a position to name himself as the issuing authority.
