CELTIC, Britain. Catuvellauni. Tasciovanos. Circa 20 BC-10 AD. AV Quarter Stater (1.33 gm). Tasc Type. Crossed wreath motif with TASC in angles, three pellets between crescents / Plump naturalistic horse right with beaded mane, bucranium above, pellets around. Hobbs 1641; Van Arsdell 1692; SCBC 223. Good VF, rose gold, bold wreath and fat horse. ($400)

From the Chris King Collection. Found Great Chesterford, Essex.

Whenever possible, the Celtic engraver tried to make his design look interesting and well balanced from all angles, which is why inscriptions on Celtic coins are frequently woven into the overall image, rather than being a separate part of it. The way the letters TASC are incorporated into the angles of the cruciform motif neatly illustrates this point.
