KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III. 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (20mm, 4.02 gm). Miletos mint. Struck under Demetrios Poliorketes, 295/4 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress /
ALEXANDROU, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and sceptre; monogram in left field, double axe under throne. Price 2148; ADM I, Series XIII, 269 (same reverse die); Müller 1139. Good VF, light porosity.
This coin belongs in a series of Alexander-type coinage that mirrors the control marks on a series of Demetrios' royal coinage. Thompson (ADM) and Price conclusively link the series, and Price maintains that they were struck concurrently, during the single year that Demetrios held Miletos before its capture by Lysimachos in 294 (see Price, pg. 277).
