SEXTUS POMPEIUS MAGNUS, son of Pompey the Great. Circa 43-36 BC. AE As (30mm, 23.90 gm). Uncertain Sicilian mint. Laureate head of Janus with features of Pompeius Magnus / Prow of galley right. Crawford 479/1; RPC 671; CRI 336; Sydenham 1044a. Near VF, green and red-brown patina.

While this type has traditionally been assigned to Spain during the period 45-44 BC, it is more likely that it was struck in Sicily after Sextus Pompey's arrival in 43 BC. Here, the edges are rounded unlike the straight edges of the pieces certainly struck in Spain, and the style of this issue varies considerably suggesting that several mints may have been involved in production.
