Sold for $1200. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Roman. 1st-2nd centuries AD. Iron seal ring with red jasper intaglio (27mm ring, 24mm intaglio). Simple iron ring with no visible decoration. Red jasper intaglio set in bezel. The face of the intaglio showing a well carved, androgynous young man (or Apollo) with curling locks and tied tunic facing right. Cracks on stone present. Website shipping rates do not apply.

From the William Whetstone Collection.

It was common on intaglios in the Roman period to use androgynous images of perfect Romans. This portrait seems to follow suit with others of the type.
