An Important Phoenician Bronze Bracelet

455, Lot: 553. Estimate $5000.
Sold for $4000. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Ancient Near East. Phoenicia. Circa 9th-8th centuries BC. Bronze bracelet (7.5cm/ 7.1cm internal diameter). A riveted bronze bracelet with significant engraving. At center, the bracelet has a solar image, flanked by a annulet-filled border to either side. To the left, there is a scene of a man resting in leisure among trees; to left, an animal standing right. To the left of that, a scene of divine signifance, a winged, celestial creature with winges extended sits before an enthroned official, holding a wreath. To the left of that, a fortified city (Tyre?) awaits arrival of a ship full of sailors and goods, moving to the city. To the left of that, a procession of seven people, soldiers (unfinished). A bucking bull and an exotic bird with head turned back to right. Finally, a dock, with two boats, one with a pattern of stars over it; the other, the winged Sun of Assur. Cf. General Research Division, The New York Public Library. “The tribute of the ships of Tyre and Sidon, and the capture of Khazazu.” The New York Public Library Digital Collections. 1880-1902. http://digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/510d47e2-5bd2-a3d9-e040-e00a18064a99. Attractive brown patina, traces of green. As made. A significant example, showing trade and exchange between Phoenicia and Assyria. Website shipping rates do not apply.

Ex Private Collection Nevada, circa 1990s, purchased on the European Market.

Portions of this iconography loosely resemble the scenes of tribute to Shalmaneser III from Tyre and Sidon after the Assyrian capture of Khazazu found on the gates of Nineveh, found in Balawat.
