NORMAN. William I 'the Conqueror'. 1066-1087. AR Penny (18mm, 1.27 g, 6h). Sword type (BMC VI). Lewes mint; Oswold, moneyer. Struck circa 1077-1080. Crowned facing bust, holding sword over shoulder / + OSPOLD ON LIEPSI, cross pattée; all over quadrilateral, with incurved sides and fleur in each quarter. King –; SCBI –; BMC – (but cf. 414, for Winræd, moneyer); North 846; SCBC 1255. VF, toned. Extremely rare. One of only two known for this type at Lewes.
