SCOTLAND. Alexander III. 1249-1286. AR Penny (18mm, 1.24 g, 8h). First coinage, type III. ‘Fres’ mint; Walter, moneyer. Struck 1250-circa 1280. Crowned head left; scepter before / Voided long cross; stars in quarters. SCBI 35 (Ashmolean & Hunterian), 117 (same obv. die); SCBC 5043. Near VF, toned, some porosity, edge a little ragged. Rare.

The obverse die for this issue at the rare ‘Fres’ was also used to strike pennies at Glasgow and Montrose (cf. Stewart, pp. 278–9, and SCBI 35, 119 and 126, respectively).
