429, Lot: 50. Estimate $300.
Sold for $525. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (15mm, 4.28 g, 12h). Sardes mint. Struck under Menander, circa 324/3 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; no control marks. Price –; ADM I Series X, 78a var. (monogram below throne; same obv. die); CNG E-422, lot 84 (same dies). EF, toned. Extremely rare, apparently the second or third known of this issue.

It is possible that ADM I Series X, 78b is of this unmarked issue; the reverse controls on that coin are listed as “obscure”, which may indicate that control marks were expected, but cannot be seen–possibly because none are present on that coin. Unfortunately, the piece is not illustrated in ADM, nor can it be found in Pella.
