Hadrian. AD 117-138. AV Aureus (19mm, 7.20 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 124-128. RIC II 187d; Calicó 1225 = Biaggi 595 (this coin); BMCRE 437 var. (spear held horizontally). EF, natural edge flaw.

In CNG’s office copy of the Hirsch catalog, margin notations indicated this coin sold to Rodolfo Ratto (1866-1949) for 230 Marks. Ratto was one of the better known coin dealers of his day. He “entered in direct relations with the Royal House of Savoy, the Vatican Museum, Count Pappadopoli of Venice, the Bibliothèque Nationale, the British Museum, and a large number of foreign collectors and dealers” (NumCirc 58.1 [January 1950], p. 671).
