CAROLINGIANS. Odo (Eudes). King of West Francia, 887-898. AR Denier (22.5mm, 1.21 g, 7h). Limovicas (Limoges) mint. + GRΛTIΛ D–I RE, +/◊D◊/+ in three lines / + LIII◊VICΛS CVS, cross pattée. Depeyrot 511; cf. M&G 1334; MEC 1, –. VF, toned, slight ghosting on obverse.

From the Simon Coupland Collection. Ex OGN FPL 41 (Spring 2003), no. 521.

Like several other later Carolingian coinages, the coins of Odo from Limoges became an immobilised type which went on being minted well into the feudal age. This one is similar in style and appearance to one in the collection of Philip Grierson: MEC 1.976. [S. Coupland]
