CAROLINGIANS. Odo (Eudes). King of West Francia, 887-898. AR Denier (20.5mm, 1.57 g, 11h). Blesianiscastro (Blois) mint. + MISERICORDIA I-I, Odo Rex monogram / BLESIΛNISCΛS + TR◊, cross pattée. Depeyrot 163; cf. M&G 1311; MEC 1, –; cf. Künker 227, lot 2268 (for rev.). Good VF, darkly toned, slightly irregular flan. Rare variety with the cross separating the reverse legend.

From the Simon Coupland Collection. Ex Platt FPL (April 2004), no. 617.

Odo copied the unusual obverse legend first used by Louis II or III at Blois, Misericordia dei rex, but this coin has the shorter form, MISERICORDIA I-I (for DEI), which enclosed a monogram of ODO REX. The reverse inscription is a very uncommon, apparently unrecorded, variant with a die-cutter's error: the cross is inserted in the mint name instead of at the start: BLESIANISCAS+TRO. [S. Coupland]
