411, Lot: 34. Estimate $75.
Sold for $95. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

THESSALY, Gonnos. Mid-late 4th century BC. Æ Dichalkon (17.5mm, 5.85 g, 9h). Head of nymph right, wearing earring / ΓΟΝΝEΩΝ, lion standing right. Rogers 226 var. (ethnic); BCD Thessaly II 76.3; HGC 4, 162. VF, dark brown patina.

From the BCD Collection.

A note from BCD from the Triton sale: One may assume that the lions were a threat to the sheep population at Gonnos and having one on the coins would be a useful reminder for the shepherds to watch out for them and at the same time an attempt to exorcise them.
