Anonymous. 130-125 BC. Æ Quadrans (17mm, 3.33 g, 2h). Mast and sail (second) series. Rome mint. Head of Hercules right, wearing lion’s skin headdress; ••• (mark of value) to left / Prow of galley right; above, mast with sail, ••• (mark of value) to right, ROMA below. Crawford – (but cf. 264/4 for stylistic similarity); Sydenham –; Type as RBW –; Unpublished. Good VF, brown surfaces, a few deposits. Extremely rare.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection, purchased from Mike Vosper, 2016.

This quadrans is compatible in style and fabric with the RRC 264 Servilia issue. Compare to the semis with lion (RRC 264/2), which has a prow of very similar style. This coin shows a mast and sail above the prow, yet is clearly unrelated to the RRC 213 mast and sail series. Possibly it is an imitative issue, although considering its fine style that ties it to issues of the 120s BC, it may be an anonymous issue from the Rome mint related to the Servilia coinage or another coincident issue.
