Interesting Engraver’s Error

405, Lot: 505. Estimate $100.
Sold for $340. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Claudius II Gothicus. AD 268-270. Antoninianus (20mm, 3.44 g, 12h). Antioch mint, 7th officina. 1st emission, circa late AD 268-late AD 269. Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / VIRT-VS AVG, Vulcan standing right, holding hammer and pincers; –/–//Z. Normanby –; RIC V –; RIC V Online 1029 (this coin cited). EF, nice silvering. Extremely rare with this reverse legend.

From the Finn Johannessen Collection, purchased from Charles Euston, 2 March 2012.

The reverse legend is an engraver’s error. The normal legend REGI ARTIS (to the king of the arts, see previous lot) has here been replaced by VIRTVS AVG. RIC Online currently cites only four coins with this error.
