Sold for $150. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Q. Titius. 90 BC. Æ As (26mm, 11.03 g, 3h). Rome mint. Laureate head of bearded Janus / Prow of galley right; Q•TITI and palm frond above. Crawford 341/4d; Sydenham 694b; Type not in RBW, but cf. RBW 1277-9. VF, dark brown patina, areas of weak strike.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection.

The obverse of this as is most unusual, with its bun-style hairstyle and narrow head giving it an almost Chinese complexion. Although the area before the prow is flat, a palm branch can be seen protruding behind the prow stem, cf. Heinrich Willers, Geschicte der Römischen Kupferprägung, Leipzig 1909, p. 61, coin 28. The reference in RRC p. 345 to Hannover 2488 is in error and should be amended to Hannover 2942. [A. McCabe]
