P. Manlius Vulso. 210 BC. Æ Quadrans (20mm, 3.92 g, 6h). MA series. Mint in Sardinia. Head of Hercules right, wearing lion skin; ••• (mark of value) to left / Prow of galley right; ligate MA (vertical) before; ••• (mark of value) below. Crawford 64/5; Sydenham 160b; Type as RBW 268. Fine, rough dark brown patina. Extremely rare.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection, purchased from Numisantique Markus Beyeler, 2011.

64/5 MA quadrans, Sardinia mint, overstrike, extremely rare type, of the same style as the previous spearhead quadrans, and undoubtedly from the same engraving hand. Note, for example, the prow-stem and the treatment of the keel lines and rostrum tridens, the way the lion skin headdress folds on Hercules’ head and his facial expression. [A. McCabe]
