Sold for $475. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

EGYPT, Alexandria. Vespasian. AD 69-79. BI Tetradrachm (25mm, 9.69 g, 12h). Dated RY 2 (AD 69/70). Laureate head right; L B (date) below chin / ΑΛΕΞΑΝ-[ΔΡ]ΕΙΑ, Nike advancing left, holding wreath and palm frond. Köln 276-7 var. (without reverse legend); Dattari (Savio) 360 var. (same); K&G 20.12 var. (same); RPC II 2412 var. (same); Emmett 205.2 var. (same). VF, dark brown patina with earthen highlights/deposits. Rare variety with “Alexandria” on the reverse, combined with the Nike type.

From the Dr. Lawrence D. Sporty Collection.

This coin is an unusual variety as it combines the standard “Nike advancing left, holding wreath and palm frond type” with the ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΕΙΑ legend on the reverse. It should depict Alexandria, wearing an elephant-skin cap, and holding a wreath and scepter. It is most likely an engraver’s error.
