KINGS of OSRHOENE (EDESSA). Waël. AD 163-165. Æ (20mm, 9.68 g, 3h). Draped bust left / Temple seen in perspective, containing cubic cult object. SNG Copenhagen –; BMC 2. Fine, dusty green patina. Rare.

Edessa was a small independent kingdom in an unenviable position between the feuding Roman and Parthian empires. Waël was appointed to the throne by the Parthian Vologases IV, who had deposed the legitimate king Ma'nu VIII. Waël's reign lasted a brief two years before he himself was deposed by the Romans.
