Interesting “Double” Sestertius of Postumus

356, Lot: 546. Estimate $150.
Sold for $260. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Postumus. Romano-Gallic Emperor, AD 260-269. Æ Sestertius (31mm, 19.06 g, 6h). Treveri (Trier) mint. 3rd bronze emission, AD 261. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Fides standing facing, head left, holding two signa. RIC V 124; Mairat 187; Bastien 74; Banti 11/B. VF, dark green patina, some corrosion and roughness, obverse incised to add radiate crown.

At some point in antiquity, the obverse bust has been incised to add a radiate crown. This was done to alter the value to a double sestertius, and since the weight and diameter difference between the single and double sestertii of Postumus was subtle, this attempt may have been successful.
