354, Lot: 202. Estimate $100.
Sold for $70. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. Circa 550-515 BC. AR Twelfth Stater (8mm, 0.79 g). Persic standard. Bird standing left on uncertain object (branch or crescent?); unclear legend around / Rough incuse square punch. Triton XII, lot 353; otherwise unpublished. Near VF, toned, porous. One of two known.

The inscription on this issue (more clear on the Triton piece), while not linked to any known figure or location, is of a form highly similar to the early electrum issues of Phanes at Ephesos and the Lydian royal series at Sardis, suggesting an origin in Western Asia Minor.
