SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS. 193-211 AD. AR Denarius (2.64 gm). Struck 210 AD. SEVERVS PIVS AVG, laureate head right / VICTORIAE, AVGG in exergue, Victory, holding wreath and palm, driving quadriga right. Cf. RIC IV 299; cf. BMCRE 370; RSC 713a corr. (see below). Good VF. Very rare. ($300)

From the Marc Melcher Collection.

This is the second known specimen of this type. The other specimen, now residing in the British Museum, is the ex-G. R. Arnold Collection piece that appeared as B41 in Seaby's Coin and Medal Bulletin of January 1964. RSC 713a cites that specimen, but incorrectly identifies the quadriga as a biga.
