Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (17mm, 2.91 g, 3h). Barbarous imitation. Uncertain mint. Radiate bust right / Galley with oarsmen and mainmast; SIC to right, AD below. RIC V –. Fair, green and brown patina, some roughness. Rare.
From the Simon Shipp Collection.
Antoniniani with a galley reverse are rare for Carausius. Most known have either a FELICITAS AVG or LAETITIA AVG legend. The reverse legend and overall quality of this piece seems to indicate a barbarous imitation. A search of our database finds only three coins of Carausius with a galley reverse, and a CoinArchives search does not add any to the census.
