Sold for $380. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

THRACE, Mesembria. Caracalla. AD 198-217. Æ (27mm, 11.53 g, 8h). AV K M AYP ANTΩNINO, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / ΜЄCΑΜΒΡ Ι ΑΝΩΝ, Dionysos seated left on throne, holding filleted thyrsus and overturning cantharus on knee. SNG Copenhagen –; Varbanov 4158 corr. (Zeus, holding scepter and patera); Mouchmov 3993 corr. (same); Karayotov 23 corr. (same). VF, dark green patina, some cleaning marks. Very rare.

From the Dr. George Spradling Collection.

The example cited by Mouchmov in 1912 was too poor to determine the obverse legend, and the reverse type was also incorrectly described as Zeus, with a scepter and patera, rather than Dionysos, whose filleted thyrsus and overturned cantharus are clearly visible on this example. Karayotov and Varbanov based their listings upon this erroneous reading and description with no other cited examples for comparison.
