SELEUKID KINGS of SYRIA. Antiochos XII. 87/6-84 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.10 gm). Damascus mint. Dated year 229 (84 BC). Diademed head right / BASILEWS ANTIOCOU EPIFANOUS FILOPATOROS KALLINIKOU, cult statue of Hadad facing on double basis, flanked by two bull foreparts, holding grain stalk; monograms outer left, monogram and QK[S] (date) in exergue; all within laurel wreath. SNG Spaer -; Houghton & Spaer -; Newell, LSM -; Houghton -. Good VF, dark hoard patina. Extremely rare type and not recorded for this year. ($4000)

In his study of the series, Houghton recorded 7 examples of this type struck for years 226, 227 and 228. No coins are recorded for year 229. It is interesting to note that the coins of years 226 and 227 show Antiochos without a beard. Those of 228 show him with a slight beard. This coin dated year 229 shows him with a full beard.
